The story

Why I built Ilvrant.

The short version: I was bad at theory, until it turned out I’d just been taught it the one way my brain couldn’t use. Here’s the long version.

I was bad at theory. I barely passed Grade 4. My near-perfect Grade 5 came through tears, feeling the whole time like I was terrible at it — and afterwards I still believed it. I turned down school music programmes because of it. The way theory was taught — workbooks, marked down, barely understanding why, try again — taught me one reliable thing: that I was a failure at anything theoretical about music.

Until it flipped

It took years to turn around. A-Level music began it — analysing composers and their works up close, I started to see theory as a description of what’s actually there, not a list of things you must do for reasons no one names. Berklee finished it: somewhere in jazz harmony, theory stopped being rules about what you’re allowed to do and became a description of what’s happening in the music — what is, and, when you get there, what can be. Once theory describes instead of forbids, you can play with it. I wasn’t bad at theory. Early on, I’d just been taught it in the one way my brain couldn’t use.

Then I saw it from the other side

Years of teaching showed me my students hitting the same wall from a different angle. Most aren’t failing — they’re worse off than that: missing layers here and there, enough to be unstable, never enough to fail outright. So they struggle the whole way through, patching over gaps they don’t know they have.

And I kept seeing the same thing. A student could recite the method for working out an interval, correctly, and still not do it — or do it in ten minutes, for something that takes ten seconds. Because it took ten minutes, they didn’t trust it: they’d slip somewhere small, decide the method was broken, and go debugging the one part that wasn’t the problem. It was never comprehension. It was fluency — and there was nothing anywhere for building it.

So I built it

None of this is a failing of teachers. Plenty of us want to do exactly this — I did. By hand, it’s brutally expensive: you write or curate every worksheet, carry students through a beginning that’s often painful and demoralising, then guess from the outside whether they’ve really got it or only struggled through. Even if you want to give every student that, you can’t — there aren’t the hours. My method worked and was too expensive to run. So I built the tool, and built the method into it.

There’s one more thing the platform does that I can’t. Learning fundamentals is slow, repetitive, and — for students — sometimes embarrassing. In a lesson it comes wrapped in noise: ego, fear of disappointing you, the suspicion they’ll be scolded for getting it wrong. A platform has no opinion of you. It notices exactly what you’re fluent in and what you’re not, without judgment, and nudges you — sometimes invisibly — where you need to be. You still need teachers; I’m not throwing students to a machine. But the grinding should happen somewhere nobody’s watching.

The students who come out the other side aren’t doing anything dramatic. They’re just faster, and sure of themselves. Occasionally one goes “wait — that’s how it works?” and stops struggling on the spot. Most of them had simply never looked for the pattern. Nobody had ever shown them there was one.

The principle

Designed ND-first. That’s why it works for everyone.

This system was built by a neurodivergent brain, around how a neurodivergent brain actually gets fluent: explicit patterns instead of conventions absorbed by osmosis, lower layers automated so working memory has room to think, short loops, fast feedback, nothing left implicit.

The way theory has always been taught quietly assumes you’ll pick things up along the way. Plenty of students can survive that. Surviving it isn’t the same as it being good for you — implicit, high-load teaching is a tax everyone pays, and some students can’t afford it at all.

So we removed the tax. Curb cuts were designed for wheelchairs; everyone with a stroller or a suitcase uses them. Same thing here: design for the learners the standard approach fails, and the rest run faster too. Speed criteria can come off where they’d measure the wrong thing. Structure stays explicit for everyone. One system that flexes across a class — because it was built for the students classes usually flex around.

The method

  1. Make it make sense first

    Students meet the pattern before the rules, so the facts have somewhere to land — not just a list to memorise.

  2. Understand the why, then let it settle

    Concepts slot into that framework precisely — understood once, then deepened through spaced re-exposure, the way anything you actually understand keeps quietly reorganising itself between sessions.

  3. Build automaticity from the bottom

    You can’t manipulate intervals while you’re still counting note-skips. Fast, bite-sized drills push the base layers until they’re free — effortful retrieval travelling toward easy fluency.

  4. The gate is the diagnosis

    Students arrive patchy, not blank. Mastery gates find each one’s missing layers: fluent ones pass through in two minutes, missing ones get built. No placement test — and speed criteria come off where they’d measure the wrong thing.

  5. Games where the theory is the mechanic

    Playing better means finding more routes into the same idea — so a fact you were told becomes something you worked your way into. Varied routes build flexible knowledge, and flexible knowledge transfers.
